When the summer crowds head home and the lanes go quiet, West Dorset is at its best. The hedgerows turn gold, the beaches are almost empty and the evenings are made for curling up somewhere warm. If you’re after an autumn break in Dorset that feels a world away from everyday life, a stay in one of our shepherd’s huts at Hobby Farm is just the thing.
Hobby Farm is an adults-only glamping and camping site in Whitchurch Canonicorum, tucked into the Marshwood Vale near Bridport and just four miles from the beaches of the Jurassic Coast. Here’s why autumn is the perfect time to visit, and how to make the most of a few days here.
Why choose a shepherd’s hut in Dorset for an autumn break?
Autumn is when a shepherd’s hut really comes into its own. Ours sit in their own field overlooking the farm’s fishing pond, with far-reaching countryside views. You spend your days out walking the coast and your evenings tucked up inside with the heating on.
- Peace and quiet: we’re adults only, so it’s a calm, relaxed place to unwind, perfect for couples and solo travellers.
- Cosy comforts: heating, a large comfy bed, smart TV and WiFi, with a kitchenette for simple meals.
- Your own space outside: outdoor seating and a fire pit for wrapping up warm under the stars.
- Close to the coast: Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Bridport and West Bay are all a short drive away.
Meet the huts
We have four shepherd’s huts at Hobby Farm, each in its own peaceful spot:
- Hare’s Hideaway and Fox’s Den: our luxury huts, with bedding provided, an ensuite shower room, heating and private outdoor seating looking out over the pond and countryside.
- Badger’s Retreat: our budget-friendly hut, with a double bed, ensuite shower and toilet, heating and outdoor seating. Bring your own bedding or add it when you book.
- Otter’s Nest: our original hut, with a super king bed, heating and a kitchenette. The campsite’s hot showers and toilets are a short walk away. It’s the one to choose for a single-night stay.
Stays start from £110 a night. Most huts have a two-night minimum, Otter’s Nest takes one-night bookings, and there are special offers on 3, 4 and 7 night stays. You can see all our shepherd’s huts here or go straight to booking a shepherd’s hut at Hobby Farm.
Things to do in West Dorset in autumn
Fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast
Autumn and winter are among the best times to go fossil hunting at Charmouth and Lyme Regis. Rough seas and wet weather wash new material out of the cliffs, and ammonites and belemnites turn up on the beach for anyone willing to look. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre on the seafront is a great first stop for advice on where to search safely. Always check the tide times, keep away from the base of the cliffs, and search the beach rather than the cliff face.
Walks with views: Golden Cap, Pilsdon Pen and the Marshwood Vale
West Dorset is walking country, and autumn colour makes it even better. Climb Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast, for views along the whole of Lyme Bay. Inland, the Iron Age hillfort at Pilsdon Pen, one of the highest hills in Dorset, looks out over the patchwork fields of the Marshwood Vale. There are plenty of quieter footpaths and lanes right on our doorstep too. Have a look at our favourite local walks for ideas.
Beaches without the crowds
An autumn beach walk is hard to beat. Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Seatown and West Bay are all close by, and out of season you’ll often have long stretches of shingle and sand almost to yourself. See our guide to beaches and coastline near Hobby Farm.
Market towns, pubs and local food
Bridport is a proper Dorset market town, with a busy street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays plus independent shops, antiques and cafés. Lyme Regis has its harbour, the Cobb and plenty of places to eat with a sea view. After a long walk there’s nothing better than a country pub with a fire going and a plate of local food. We’ve picked out our favourites in our food and drink guide.
Our own village: Whitchurch Canonicorum
Our home village is worth a wander too. The Church of St Candida and Holy Cross is known for its medieval shrine of St Wite. It’s one of very few shrines in England still said to hold a saint’s relics, and visitors still leave notes and prayers there today. You’ll find more hidden gems in local spots we love.
Dark skies and starry nights
Longer, darker evenings in the countryside mean brilliant stargazing on clear nights. Light the fire pit, wrap up in a blanket and look up. With so little light pollution out here in the vale, the stars are something special.
A sample autumn weekend at Hobby Farm
- Friday: arrive, settle into your shepherd’s hut, and watch the light fade over the pond before a quiet evening in.
- Saturday: head to Charmouth for a morning of fossil hunting, then a pub lunch. Finish with an afternoon walk up Golden Cap and a fire-pit evening back at the hut.
- Sunday: browse Bridport or Lyme Regis, take a final beach walk, and stop for a long lunch on your way home.
What to pack for an autumn glamping break in Dorset

- Warm layers and a hat for fire-pit evenings
- A small bag and a bit of patience for fossil hunting
- Your own bedding if you’re staying in Badger’s Retreat (unless you add it when booking) or Otter’s Nest
- A torch for the walk back from the pub or the showers
